Fun with math paradoxes
A friend just sent me a mathematical proof of 1=0 over AIM. Within 6 minutes, he had been pwned. Here's the log: (17:16:13) LOZKing: I broke math. (17:16:14) LOZKing: 4x²+4x+1=0 sqrt(4x²+4x+1)=sqrt0 2x+1=0 x²+2x+1=x² sqrt(x²+2x+1)=sqrt(x²) x+1=x 1=0 *Universe implodes* (17:17:12) biolizard89: hang on while I absorb that (17:20:18) biolizard89: all right, so if x^2+2x+1=x^2, then 2x+1=0, then 2x=-1, then x=-0.5 AHA, I SEE THE ERROR! (17:20:26) biolizard89: Let's see... (17:20:40) biolizard89: You made the mistake of thinking that sqrt(x^2) = x (17:20:42) biolizard89: it isn't (17:20:45) biolizard89: it's abs(x) (17:21:12) biolizard89: So this should reduce to abs(x+1) = abs(x), which is true for x=-0.5 (17:21:29) biolizard89: Which was the only solution to the original equation (17:21:32) biolizard89: pwned Yeah, he didn't know why it was false. Anyone else dealt with fake math paradoxes?

Well, I remember a brainteaser my sister told me about these guys who had $30, split it up all different ways, put it back together, and had $29. I found out that the reason was that they subtracted $3 and added $2 in one place, so it was easily disproven. I also remember reading a statement about how 6 * 5 = 29, and it actually did work (they used a base other than 10), but I can't find it anymore.

a > 0 and b > 0, but that doesn't mean that a = b.

all assumptions

Found that on some clothing website. Props to anyone who can find the mistake. xDThat's easy. Step 5 divides both sides of the equation by a-b, which is illegal since a=b, so a-b=0. Division-by-zero errors are probably the most common fake math paradox.

See maths is flawless. My maths teacher used to set us things like that to make us think. Try: 3 + 4 = 12 (you have to prove it) Solution: It works in a number base of 5
